Chrollo Lucifer is a Freeccss.

Hisoka is a freak. The whole Hunter x Hunter fandom knows that. How about that there is another “freak” within the Phantom Troupe - yeah, I know technically Hisoka was just posing as one of them - but I am talking about a different “freak”. As it sounds, plurally, but spelled differently. What I mean is the protagonist’s family name, Freecss, as it is the last name of Gon. And what if I tell you that the leader of the Phantom Troupe is a member of this bloodline that even the he is not aware of - yet. Yes I am talking about the charismatic leader named Chrollo Lucifer.

Chrollo Lucifer

Chrollo Lucifer did not have much that even the Hunterpedia of Hunter X Hunter fandom.com page said so. As far as we know is that he grew up in Meteor City, a city where trash and other stuff gets dumped. Pretty much anything people wanted to get rid of they send it off to this city. It can be a material value and to the evilest sense, a living person. No one knows if Chrollo was born in Meteor City but there is also a great possibility that he was dumped and abandoned in there. No knowledge of his parents and this is were we get in and have a telenovela-esque theory about Chrollo’s lineage.

Chrollo is abandoned in Meteor City

I think Chrollo Lucifer’s parent(s) abandoned, or was left with someone that is, in Meteor City to look after him. Where do we see this attitude from? The guy who named his son based on what he was going to do. Got to love this meme.

Joking aside, it might be the weakest explanation, but I think a Freeccs relative might be the person(s) that did this. Almost all of the Freeccs lineage mentioned in the Hunter X Hunter world are curious adventurers that once they set their mind into something, they will try to learn more about the new things they have encountered. Almost all also have the tendency to abandon the people they know just to get answer in their own curiosity. Don Freeccs curious of the Dark Continent. As well as Gon’s father, Ging Freeccs, are curious of the Dark Continent but was already curious of the world at a young age that he sets off to become a Hunter at a young age. Though we do not have much information on Don Freeccs we can be safe to assume that he has a family that he left to explore the Dark Continent just as Ging left Whale Island to explore the world. And look at what Gon did, he left Whale Island to be a Hunter and find his father.

The notion of the Freeccs behavior of curiosity and leaving people close to them is like a familial trait, caused Chrollo to grow up in Meteor City and actually take on their behavior as he grows older.

Chrollo’s interest with others Nen abilities

The Freeccs’ lineage curiosity. As I mentioned before, this familial line likes to explore and learn about the world, just as all human beings. It might be another weak point and behavior is a product of environment, but then again it is a fact we cannot ignore.

If Chrollo find a certain Nen-user’s ability as unique he will try to steal it as what a member of a Phantom Troupe does. He is a Specialist class Nen-user in which he has a complex but powerful ability that would require a proficient and knowledgeable in Nen. I really do not want to go over what Nen is and what is its specification but check out NCHammer23’s explanation about it.

Skill Hunter

Skill Hunter is the main weapon of Chrollo. Pretty much a Sharingan in a book form. Please if you are reading this, I am not into the comparison debate. It is one of the complex Nen-ability in the Hunter X Hunter almost similar to Kurapika’s “chains” as this technique requires conditions. A Specialists type Nen-user is rare as it is either you are born with it or was exposed to an environment that allows a Nen-user to pick up this affinity.

So, Skill Hunter or Bandit Secret allows Chrollo to steal a Nen-ability, and that Nen-user will lose that ability. To do that, Chrollo have to meet four conditions and it is list as follows:

1. Chrollo must witness the Nen ability in action with his eyes.

2. He must ask questions about Nen and be answered by the victim.

3.His victim's palm must touch the handprint on the cover of Bandit's Secret.

4. All of the above must be completed within one hour.

Its complicated conditions shows how Chrollo as intelligent and capable Nen-user by using this power. He has curiosity that as I have mentioned, the Freeccss have in them and the drive to learn more. A member of the Phantom Troupe mentioned the love that Chrollo have on ancient text which probably prompt the Skill Hunter to be based on a book. And speaking of books, somehow the Freeccss love them as well.

Freeccss’ Book Club

Might be a stretch but somehow the Freeccss’ are tied with books. The legendary Don Freeccss was the author of Journey to the New World, a book that has information about the Dark Continent. According to Ging Freeccss, Don Freeccss traveled on the shoreline of the Dark Continent and wrote about his adventures and findings. The V5 nation has in possession the “East” version of the book while the “West” version had not been found. Ging believed that Don Freeccss is still writing the “West” part to this day after starting it 300 years ago. It is not farfetched as they are aware of one of the five calamaties shows the ability to be immortal but with a condition of eating your own skin. Don Freeccss might have gotten this and thus still alive, or just somehow figure out to live longer like Netero using Nen. Again, the Freeccss’ are a curious family.

Getting back to the book, Ging is one of the creators of the Greed Island game in which they have a binder available for the players to put in the cards they collected. Interestingly the player says “book” to appear. It might or might not had been Ging to think about this, but somehow, he is still tied to it.

And as I have discussed, Chrollo’s main Nen-ability is the Skill Hunter in which he uses a book to store the stolen Nen-abilities from others. And ironically, he uses a pen like John Wick, to kill low-tier assassins in the York New Massacre.

As for Gon, he might not be as brilliant compared to this legendary Freeccss’, he does like to write to Aunt Mito about her adventures while he is gone.

Freeccss’ are authors where they write about themselves and their curiosity.

Curiosity keeps the Freeccss’ move forward

Curiosity kills cats. But not the Freeccss. It is in their blood as the Zoldyck’s like to kill for fun and money. A Hunter is pretty much the embodiment of the Freeccss, that I think they are somewhat part of the inception of the Hunter Association. As what a Hunter would do in this world is to hunt for answers that they are curious of. They would want to understand how one thing work or its origin. And just like a book, whatever a Hunter discover something, they are bound to share this to each other. Pretty much the Hunter Association is a book, a catalog of curiosity by Hunters regarding the world.

Freeccss and Abandonment

Don Freeccss going to the Dark Continent, who knows who or what he abandoned. Ging Freeccss becoming a Hunter and abandon Gon. Gon Freeccs wanted to become a Hunter as well and try to find Ging, left Mito in the Whale Island. All of them are willing to leave someone close to them to pursue their curiosity. Just as Chrollo is willing to sacrifice himself for the Phantom Troupe to keep on going. All have the selfish attitude of Freeccss to keep going forward.

Conclusion

Chrollo Lucifer’s motivations can have a basic similarity as what a Hunter in the Hunter Association will have and having the affinity of something to be an author of a book or writing. The connections of him being a Freeccss descendant is a theory based on a vague fact with loose to probably no thread at all. As Togashi have not really go in deep with Chrollo as a character and the Freeccss’ history, we can all try to link facts that are probably have no connections at all. Well, that is what theory is for. Unless the hiatus stopped, we can only imagine.
